Kentin merkezinde bulunan kalenin kesin inşa tarihi bilinmemektedir; fakat Geç Hitit Dönemlerinde(M.Ö. IX. yüzyıl) inşa edildiği düşünülür. Kale, kentin merkezinde çevresine hâkim bir tepede, stratejik bir noktada oluşu ayrıca önemlidir. Kuzey-güney doğrultuda yaklaşık 83x140 m ölçülerindeki yapı, moloz taş ve kesme taş malzeme kullanılarak inşa edilmiştir. Özellikle 7-8. yüzyıllar da Bizanslılar ve Müslüman devletler arasında sık sık el değiştirdiği için kale defalarca tahrip olmuş onarım görmüştür. Bu noktada esaslı bir onarımın Osmanlı Padişahı Kanuni Sultan Süleyman(1520-1566) tarafından yaptırılmıştır.
Ünlü seyyah Evliya Çelebi 1642-1672 yıllarında şehrimize gelmiş ve Maraş kalesinden bahsederken burada 1 camii bulunan 100 haneli bir mahalleden bahsetmesi kale alanın önemini gösterir bir bilgidir. Yapının son durumu 1960-1970 yıllarına aittir. Bu noktada hali hazırda tarihi kültürel değeri yanında, duruşu, özellikleri ve şehri kuşatan tarifsiz panoramasıyla ziyaretçilerine ayrı bir keyif sunmaktadır.
